We are two sisters belonging to a Hindu family. Our parents are traditional Hindus but we both have accepted the Lord Jesus as our personal saviour, several years ago. We are professionals and are well placed in society and we attend a charismatic church. Our parents do not mind us attending church but they stick to their own religious beliefs and they do not interfere with our way of life. We are eager to get married to “born again” Christian boys and we find it a little difficult as we do not know anyone suitable for us. There is a contact person in the church, who asks us to wait as he desires to mediate between us and some prospective grooms. However, this contact person keeps on telling us to wait on and on. We are above thirty years of age and are growing older by the day and we get depressed, not knowing when the wait will be over and we will get married. Can you give us some advice please?
Dear friends, we understand your situation well. There is no need for you to be anxious and depressed as we serve a living saviour and Lord who gave His life for us and is intimately interested in our lives and wishes to give us the very best.
Look at all the positive things that the Lord has done for you. You two have good jobs and earn money to take care of yourselves. Both of you know the Lord Jesus personally. He is there to take care of you till the end of time and will not leave you nor forsake you. Your parents have given you freedom and they do not interfere in your way of life and plans. You go to a good church where you hear the Word of God and can be strengthened regularly. So, do not lose your confidence but wait upon the Lord to guide and help you in your marriage as well.
Jesus came to give us abundant life (John 10:10) and He is concerned for you. Read the following verses and believe in His promises:
- Jeremiah 29:11-12 says, “For I know the thoughts that I think about you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me and I will listen to you”.
- Jeremiah 32:27 says, “Behold I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me?”
- Jeremiah 33:3 says, “Call to Me and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things which you do not know”.
- Matthew 7:7-8 says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it shall be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened”.
- Psalms 37:4 says, “Delight yourself also in the Lord and He shall give you the desires of your heart”.
- Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths”.
So, read these promises of God and act. Do not depend on one person or mediator to help you find life partners. Go out of your way and share with your pastor and to the elders of the church, who too can help you find prospective grooms. Do not feel shy. There are many converts in churches who too are looking for life-partners. Take part in the youth activities of the church and take part in programs where you can meet good marriage material. If this is not enough, put your names in the matrimonial ads in Christian magazines like the Light of Life. The Christian Messenger also has provision to put in ads.
While people are there to help in this matter, you must know that the Lord has planned life-partners for both of you from the foundations of the world. You just have to look around and find them. It is a good idea to wait upon the Lord and spend at least one day a week in fasting and prayer and depend upon Him. When the answer comes you will be confirmed in your heart about your partners and you will have peace as a sign.
Walk in faith and believe. All things are possible for them that believe (Mark 9:23)
